As we gear up for the many exciting events happening during Miami Art Week, many are especially looking forward to the offerings on exhibit at Design Miami/ 2023. Following its preview at Salone del Mobile 2022, the Stella McCartney x B&B Italia capsule collection officially launched in Miami with a mesmerising display featuring the hand-drawn ‘Fungi Fores’ print on Mario Bellini’s Le Bambole armchair and Granbambola sofa. A collage of tapestries, rugs and wall coverings make up an environment that creates a contemporary vision of sports fashion, featuring ping-pong tables and mini hoops in a graphic and playful set-up. One of the fair’s standout pieces is a large tiger at the stand of London’s David Gill Gallery.

The Stardust Pavilion, a collaborative creation by Flare, a design studio led by architects Alessandra Cianchetta and Veruska Vasconez, is set to debut during Miami Art Week 2023. This collection of glass and steel pavilions blurs the lines between art and architecture, inspired by XVII Century ‘Follies.’ It offers an immersive, whimsical experience through captivating interplays of light and reflections. The pavilion will also host an artwork by an internationally renowned artist, and it opens to the public on November 18th, 2023, in partnership with the Miami Design District. The Miami-based Craig Robins Collection features more than 1,300 pieces of contemporary art and innovative design. Showcased at the Dacra Headquarters in the Miami Design District, this year’s rearrangement of the collection is named ‘A Train of Thoughts,’ centering on two primary subgroups — figuration and conceptualism. The exhibition underscores the collection’s history of preferring intense and exaggerated figurative images alongside a self-reflective critique of art based on ideas.

The power of nature’s elements is also explored in Los Angles-based artist Lily Clark’s Curio. Creating an atmosphere of reflection, architectural fountains formed from stones from nearby Palm Springs are coupled with woodwork by furniture studio Prísma to present a serene landscape that mimics Southern Californian gardens to stroll around. Some may know A$AP Rocky for his musical talents, but most recently, he’s been turning his creative attention to design with a new studio HOMMEMADE. Launching at the fair as a Curio with radical design brand Gufram, the collaboration sees Rocky realise the Shroom Cactus – a version of the brand’s Cactus, designed by Guido Drocco and Franco Mello which is celebrating it 50th anniversary. For the Curio, the booth will be set up like a ‘utopian forest’ for visitors to indulge in the whimsical designs.

Inspired by the Lexus LF-ZC battery electric vehicle (BEV) concept car, the installation showcases the potential of carbon-neutral energy harnessing through the use of organic photovoltaic (OPV) cells. OPV sheets on the installation cast colorful shadows throughout the day, while sensors within the sculpture make it an engaging, interactive experience. The collaboration marks the artist’s first public endeavor in Miami and continues Lexus’s tradition of supporting Miami Art & Design Week in collaboration with ICA Miami. Lexus and Marjan van Aubel will exhibit ‘8 Minutes and 20 Seconds’ within the sculpture garden at Institute of Contemporary Art (ICA) Miami, 61 NE 41st St. Beginning in November 2023, Miami Deign District will introduce a permanent installation by multifaceted British designer Samuel Ross.

Through algorithmically guided processes, the artists produce 1,872 distinct generative artworks, symbolizing the brand’s founding year. The artwork by Misha Khan mirrors its maker’s maximalist sculptural assemblage practice in the form of a mesmerizing topography of sugary hills and jiggling streams. Two of Kahn’s jurassic aluminum stools bookend the array and, nearby, an absorbing seating arrangement by Darren Romanelli features two pieces upholstered in a camouflage pattern that, paradoxically, are hard to ignore. The work will be a part of the group show ‘The Power of Purpose,’ open from November 24th — December 10th, 2023 at Wynwood Walls, 2516 NW 2nd Ave, Miami. This year, Bohinc Studio-founder Lara Bohinc has been awarded the 2023 Design Commission by the Design Miami/ Curatorial Lab and the Miami Design District. Standing tall with rounded, intersecting volumes — the designer’s signature — the sculptural work will welcome visitors at the entrance of Design Miami/ and will continue on into the new year.

This year, it highlights works by the German artist Lukas Wegwerth, who arranges hand-painted wooden shingles on his sculptures and furniture in a series named for armadillos. RIMOWA is collaborating with local Miami artist Typoe, whose custom chandelier-inspired art piece now graces the permanently renovated Miami Design District store. The artwork, featuring a dynamic composition of colorful shapes and RIMOWA’s iconic aluminum grooves, represents the ongoing construction of our surroundings with a touch of childlike wonder. To coincide with Miami Art Basel 2023, RIMOWA and Typoe will reveal a complementary window display during the week of December 4th, incorporating oversized shapes and the brand’s aluminum suitcases. BMW returns as the official partner of Art Basel Miami Beach, this year teaming up with Los Angeles-based artist Alex Israel with an installation titled REMEMBR. Spanning seven custom-designed screens, the immersive installation continues BMW’s commitment to innovation, cutting-edge technology, and the arts. REMEMBR by BMW and Alex Israel will be on view alongside the fully electric BMW i5 at the BMW Lounge at Art Basel Miami Beach Collectors Lounge from December 8th — December 10th. Jomo Tariku, an award-winning Ethiopian-American industrial designer & artist, presents several new collections at this year’s show that move the language of design forward through an exploration of new ideas, new furniture categories and new materials. Each piece in his presentation connects to his Ethiopian heritage and roots growing up in Africa.
Selected works reflect on America’s history and the importance of building and celebrating sites of refuge, renewal, and reflection for Black Americans, people of color, and migrants today. The exhibition will be on view to the public December 5th, 2023 until January 22nd 2024 at the Historic Hampton House. Lexus partners with Dutch solar designer Marjan van Aubel to create a sun-powered installation for Miami Art & Design Week 2023. The show’s title, ‘8 Minutes and 20 Seconds,’ references the time it takes light from the sun to reach the earth.
For Design Miami/ 2023, The Future Perfect will unveil a selection of new collectible design pieces from its roster of artisans working at the intersection of art, design and craft, with more than 110 pieces making their debut at the fair. Coinciding with The Future Perfect’s 20th anniversary, this will be the gallery’s eighth presentation at the Miami Beach edition of Design Miami/, and its tenth time exhibiting with the international forum for design. Andreea Avram Rusu, a Romanian-born lighting and furniture designer now based in Brooklyn, presents her her first collection of mirrors, Iaz Collection, inspired by elaborate embroidery on Romanian folkloric textiles that Rusu’s grandmother mastered and taught to her. Rusu revisits her heritage of this traditional technique in a new medium, which features metal chain zig zag embroidery on mirrored glass that emulates one of the oldest embroidery motifs.
In collaboration with VA Securities, American apparel brand Nike will launch an exhibition celebrating the work of designer Virgil Abloh at the Rubell Museum. Japanese car manufacturer Lexus has partnered with the Insititute of Contemporary Art in Miami to present an installation by architect Suchi Reddy in the museum's sculpture garden. At the dedicated Design Miami pavilion, a variety of talks and exhibitors will take place from 30 November to 4 December including a panel discussion with Didero, American musicians A$AP Rocky and Erykah Badu, architect Gaetano Pesce, artist Daniel Arsham and others.
